Signs That Road Markings Need To Be Replaced

Signs That Road Markings Need To Be Replaced

Road markings play a crucial role when it comes to safety on the roads. Just as important as road signs, markings are designed to help motorists identify traffic lanes, alignment changes, provide warnings, mark parking bays, give way instructions and provide information on restrictions.

All road markings should be easily identifiable during the day and night, providing drivers with all the information they need to carry out their journeys safely.

But due to the nature of roads and the vast amount of vehicles that use them, it’s no surprise that wear and tear can have an impact on them over time.

If road markings have become damaged or worn, it’s important that they’re repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

If not, drivers may not be given the instructions they require, and this can potentially cause a hazard to all who use the roads.

worn out road markings

There are a number of easily identifiable signs that road markings need to be replaced. These include:

Faded or worn markings

If road markings have become worn or damaged over the years, it’s important to replace them as soon as possible.

While some local authorities and organisations are great at staying on top of road marking maintenance, others need more support when it comes to refreshing road markings.

At Northern Marking, we can work with you to make sure all of your markings remain in the best condition.

Vandalism

Sometimes road markings will be vandalised, and in these situations, it’s important to replace the markings as soon as it’s noticed. Vandalism can obscure the markings, meaning drivers may not be able to understand them, so this should always be rectified as soon as possible.

Resurfacing

Often, roads will be resurfaced and tarmacked in order to fix potholes or improve road surfaces. When this resurfacing has occurred, all road markings should be repainted within 6-8 weeks.

Adverse weather

If you’ve recently replaced road markings only for Britain’s famously unpredictable weather to throw up a curveball, this might be a sign that they need to be replaced.

A heavy rainstorm could wash away newly laid markings, meaning they need to be redone. Fortunately, we always use quick-drying paint, so this shouldn’t be a problem when you call upon the services of Northern Marking.

Standard guidelines for road markings

There are a variety of guideline regulations that must be followed when placing markings on the road. These include:

  • Centre Lines – all centre lines and centre warning lines should only be used on carriageways that are bigger than 5.5 metres in total width.
  • Edge of carriageway markings – these markings should only be used in conjunction with centre line-markings, with double white line systems where no kerbing exists and in places where there is a persistent problem with vehicles overrunning the highway verge.
  • Give way markings – these markings should be laid out at all junctions where no other marking is provided.
  • Other road markings – Bus stops, keep clear, school, pedestrian crossings, parking bays and other types of road markings all need to be individually assessed before approval is given for them.
